The New Year and No Goals

Did you know that word goals aren’t for everyone?

Now I love goals. In college, I had a class where I had my midterm paper done by the second week. Now don’t sick on me and stop reading. I am not going to try and convince you that you need to be like me. I don’t want you to be like me.

When I told a friend who doesn’t like the word goals about this, they looked at me like a deer in headlights. They thought I was weird. Life didn’t work that way for them. For a lot of people, it doesn’t. If it did New Year’s Resolutions would work.

Part of the reason it doesn’t work is because of the language people are using.

What a goal is, is going for something you want in a time frame that works for you.

The reason I got my assignment done early was so I could get other things done.

When we rephrase things in a way that works for us, we can get what we want.

It is figuring out what you really want and why you want it and if a time frame for getting it is necessary or not.

When I rephrased it to the person who didn’t like goals and we reworked it, they began looking at it a different way.
